TAKE Action:
A mentor once taught me, “Sometimes you just have to let things play out.” The message immediately clicked with me. It ranks among the best pieces of leadership advice I have ever received.
It’s about confidence. There are two ways to let things play out. One requires you to step up. The other allows you to step back.
Step Up – Stay calm. Think clearly. Take action. Most of the time, the only thing that will help you break through is to keep moving forward. I’ve always liked the saying, “If you’re going through hell… keep going!”
Give everything you’ve got to give. Focus on the things you can control. Allow the rest to play out.
Step Back – Sometimes you are better off sitting back and doing nothing. I remember an incident where a non-performer on my team was angry with me for placing him on a performance plan. He wrote a scathing email to me complaining. I replied that the ball was in his court he had to lift his game for my part I would be taking a step back and watching him step up! Meanwhile I made a note that each
Coaching session was thoroughly documented; sometimes you just have to let it play out.
